THE COMPLETE IDIOT’S GUIDE TO RIDING THE T-BAR

Earning your turns is a time-honored tradition in snowboarding, and those who choose to hike are often lauded for their dedication and rewarded with face shots and untouched pow. And while that’s great, we here at Yobeat believe hiking is for the birds! There’s a reason those motorized devices exist to propel you to the top of the mountain and we’re happy to take advantage. However, not all lifts are created equal and while casually sitting on a chairlift is pretty idiot proof, some lift riding requires actual skill, such as the T-bar, as we learned on our recent trip to Whistler. Not to be confused with the bar, which is actually one of…

SNOWBOARDING WITHOUT IRONY

Being “cool” in the 21st century is a tricky thing. As “core” snowboarders, we grapple with it daily. Just read the comment sections on this site and you’ll see, snowboarding is a competitive fashion show masked as a “sport” and parading as a fun activity. But why? Why are we so concerned about the size of each other’s pants or the straightness of a boardslide? In a recent article in the New York Times Princeton French professor Christy Wampole hits the nail on the head of what is actually the much bigger plight of an entire generation. Millennials, born in the 80s and 90s. are are growing up and coming to terms…

30-SOMETHING REASONS COLORADO SUCKS

It’s often been commented, “Yobeat hates Colorado.” So much so that it’s become a running joke every time we feature a CO edit. Now, it’s not entirely to say that we, the staff of Yobeat, hate the place – it has a few redeeming qualities. Southern Colorado terrain is insane, if you wanna ride parks they’re some of the best in the country, and you get drunk way easier at 10,000 feet. But that’s where it stops. The following are all the reasons the Silver State sucks. 1. Bros You’re sure to run into your fair share of bros at any ski area, comes with the territory, really. But Colorado boasts…

GIRLS’ GUIDE TO RIDING ON THE RAG

Ever since the Too Hard teaser included a girl tossing a bloody tampon, it seems even male snowboarders are aware that girls bleed once a month. It’s ok, it’s just nature and it’s what makes childbirth and the continuation of life possible. But that doesn’t mean it’s not icky for dudes to think about, a pain in the ass for girls to deal with, and most importantly, a bummer when you’re trying to get some snowboard action. Between dealing with cramps, being an even bigger bitch than normal, and trying to protect your long underwear from gross stains, it’s probably the most serious problem facing women’s snowboarding today. So as a fellow…

THE HOOD REPORT: 2017

Yeah, that’s a hybrid #portlandmeritbadge Good news kids! It’s like we’ve hopped in a time machine and headed straight back to the early ’00s when Mother Nature used to provide enough of that good stuff to go around all year long at Mt. Hood! Despite reports of dire glacial conditions at Whistler shuttering Camp of Champs, Timberline is looking prime this year with snow piles as far down as Gov’y. As of June 25th you can still do full laps on the Magic Mile lift, and there is a 22′ pipe and a mile-long park to boot! My predictions are for full laps until at least July 4th or so. The scene…

HOOD REPORT 2017: TIMBERLINE TREATED TO THE BEST SUMMER IN YEARS

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwe4-FJHuNU Filming: Adam Foster and Cam Weeg – Sorry about the music, it came free with my iphone editing software.  Fires are raging out of control in most of the Western US and September 3, 2017, the second-to-last day on hill for the Timberline summer, was a smoky one. But even though breathing was labored and it seems like the world may very well be going to hell in a hand basket, the snow on the Palmer glacier is holding strong and with minimal walking, you can lap the former Windells park until your heart’s content. Don’t wanna hike at all? Don’t blame you – that air quality is worse than Bejing…

HUMP DAY GETS A LESSON IN CULTURE AND SURVIVING SNOWBOARD MEDIA OVERLOAD WITH POSTLAND’S VIDEOGRAPHER TIM SCHIPHORST

Originally Published on Yobeat | October 4, 2017 https://vimeo.com/235770125 If you turn your attention to the video above this paragraph you will find the full version of Postland Theory’s 2016 video release “The Fourth Wall.” Why the hell are we just posting it now, you ask? Well, in the olden days, people used to care about things for more than one season – and if you haven’t watched it, you’re in for some seriously heavy boarding interspersed with beautiful scenery and some funny outtakes. But as it is now 2017, it’s really just a ploy to get you paying attention and excited for the forthcoming video “Loose,” which hits the Interwebs…

STRANGER THINGS HAVE HAPPENED THAN A HUMP DAY WITH GABBY MAIDEN

Originally Published on Yobeat | November 8, 2017 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkaTXKVoBd0 Afro tastic! Photo via INSTA Gabby Maiden has lived many lives in her 30 years on earth. She grew up in the Los Angeles music scene, moved to Bear Mountain to pursue snowboarding, went pro, and ended up all the way in Iceland as a model in the process. She put out video parts, did contests and traveled the world over with sponsors including Nikita, Von Zipper, Celtek and more, before disappearing off the board-world radar to pursue other passions. Our paths diverged a while ago, but after seeing her face in the opening scene of the second season of Stranger Things,…

Last Weekend, Whenever: The Dirksen Derby 2017

Originally Published on Yobeat | December 23, 2017 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcAwWRPHgF8 The 2017 Dirksen Derby is nothing but good vibes. Whether you spent December 15-17th complaining about back pain in the lodge, ripping around Mt. Bachelor, teaching your kids to stand on a snowboard, or actually trying to get a faster time than your friends, the 10th edition of the mostly-annual competition may just have been the best yet. Josh specifically designed the event to be fun for all. The course isn’t about survival, but rather pushing your own limits. If you make it down unscathed, you’re likely to think, “that was fun!” as opposed to other banked slaloms, where you’re just…

Tim Humphreys Tries Out for PornHub on Hump Day

Originally Published on Yobeat | January 3, 2018 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EjcuEA0NvM Filming: Keith Rutherford Edit: Daniel Evans Additional Footage courtesy of Tim Humpreys Terribly transcribed by Alexander “LEG” Johnson hemingsworth III In a world where the lines between pro, am, and nobody are barely discernable, Tim Humphreys is still a professional snowboarder. What does that mean? Well, he’s a brand ambassador, a stunt man, a filmer and editor, and now a small business owner too. He’s gracefully spun past the “normal” age when Americans disappear from professional snowboarding and is now one of the rare breed of adult who’s managing to make a living with his snowboard skills. We ran into Tim…
