State # 9: Maine

Circa: 1990 I’ve had memorable experiences in Maine in both summer and winter. As a kid we’d go up there camping and my favorite pastime was hunting through tide pools at Acadia national park. Once I was old enough to go places by myself, we’d go up to Sunday River and Sugarloaf to snowboard, and one of my all time best east coast powder days was with Andrew Mutty at Sunday River.

State # 11: Oregon

Circa 1996 (photo, the rose garden, 2007-ish) I first made it to Oregon at the tender age of 15 on a trip to High Cascade snowboard camp. It was the first time I'd flown cross country alone, so my parents insisted on getting me an escort, which I promptly ditched at the airport. Hopefully no one lost their job over it. How to Avoid the Gaper Lot

You wake up at the crack of noon, cruise up to the hill ready to ride, but before you can make it to the main parking lot, foiled. The baricade. A few under-payed parking lot attendants, a truck, some orange cones, and the dreaded sign: lot full.  The friendly attendants insist you must turn into the remote lot, the one that requires a ride on a bus full of weekend warriors who can't possibly walk by you without bumping you with every piece of their equipment. Circa 1997 Once upon a time I was snowboarding at Killington during a particularly miserable icy, rainy week. It happened that some dudes from Washington were in town, and after they watched me cut across a trail to ollie a twig, they suggested that perhaps I should make a trip out to Mt. Baker for some real snowboarding. After that initial visit I was hooked, went to college in Bellingham, snowboarded at Mt. Baker and skated the plethora of concrete parks around. It's no secret that snowboarding has hit the mainstream (6-plus years ago)! But while the snowboard industry is busy figuring out how to use the hype to sell more snowboards, the rest of the world is deftly using snowboarding to sell just about anything. For example: Telephone Service Technically, AT&T produced this commercial to show their (monetary) support for the Olympic games and their rider Gretchen Bleiler, but let's be honest, they were banking on it "going viral." 3518 SE Hawthorne Blvd Date of Visit: March 11, 2010 Cost for 2 (with tip): $21 Since it's getting close to St. Patrick's day, it seems fitting we'd finally make it to Mulligan's, although, the impending holiday actually has nothing to do with why we went there. State #13: New Jersey

Circa 1998 (please note, we were there for snowboarding) Oh dirty jerz. I once went to a Stimilon big air contest at Mountain Creek and we stayed at a hotel that was in some way connected to Hugh Heffner and Playboy. I do remember an awesome 70s theme that really made me feel like I was in New Jersey.
