Nick Lipton: A Day in the Life

As a recent college graduate with no other real responsibilities this summer than to go snowboarding at Mt. Hood, review the latest and greatest snowboards, and make videos,  Nick Lipton certainly has a pained existence. Especially when his mean old boss (me) decides to come snowboarding and see why exactly it is so difficult being Nick Lipton. 9:30 am. I find Nick passed out in all his clothes on a love seat in the Burton house. 9:45 am. A hungover and grumpy Nick peels himself off the couch. 9:50 am. Flirts with the girls at the HCSC office. 9:55 am. Orders a bagel sandwich. Must be reminded to fill out…

Toney Bento

1423 SE 37th Date of visit: June 28, 2010 Cost for 2 (with tip): $20 Our "new" options on Hawthorne are limited, so there have been a lot of trips to the same old places lately, but yesterday we finally decided to get back on blog-wagon and try out something new. Toney Bento is tucked just off the strip on 37th, and is one of the few places left on our list that isn't a dingy-looking sports bar. In fact, it looks quite appealing and even has sweet samurai swords on display. How can you go wrong with swords!? Despite the name, there is also more on the menu than…

Confessions of a Blogger

I used to not check any of the "major" snowboard sites. Frankly I didn't care or even want to know what they posted. For me, the only thing that mattered is that I was happy with what I was posting on YoBeat. But once I started selling ads, it became pretty apparent, those other sites were competition, and I'd better know what they were doing if I was going to convince people to give us money rather than them. So I set up a Google reader and started paying attention. More often than not, the other feeds looked similar to, if not exactly the same as, each other (of course…

Meet: The Bang Show

You've seen the teasers. You've wished they were your friends. And now we actually talked to the guys behind the Bang Show. After emailing with both Maxwell Scott (who runs the email) and Nick Brewer (who "invented" the crew) and getting several 1 am phone calls from Andrew Brewer, we're pretty much down with the guys. In short, this crew seems to know what snowboarding is about, and they take that shit really seriously. In fact, we give this video at least a 75% of actually coming out. Location: Colorado, Utah, New York, Reno, Mass, Minnesota, and New Jersey Riders: Ben Capron, Mike Goodwin, Andrew Brewer, Maxwell Scott, Charlie Deptula,…

Meet: Animal Farm Design

This week in the hot seat we have Utah-based Animal Farm Design. Funny story, I originally tried to get Sean Lucey to answer these questions, but on a trip to High Cascade to learned Lucey is a slacker, but met Mark Dangler who seemed like he had a bit more gumption. Wow, that wasn't really funny, was it? Anyway, here's more the story on Animal Farm from Mark. Location: Salt Lake City, Utah Government Camp, Oregon Riders: Ben Farrell, Torrey Lyons, Matty Mo, Noah Hausknecht, Josh Poehlein, Parker Duke, Ted Borland, Brandon Hammid I don’t know everyone who we ride with… Filmer/Editor: Mark Dangler, Sean Lucey First and foremost, what's…

An Average Night in Portland

June 19, 2010. Portland, Ore. A fairly typical Saturday night. Temperatures were hovering in the low 60s and the moon was peaking through the clouds. Perfect weather for an estimated 10,000 people (or more) to strip off their clothes and ride bikes in a giant pack through the city. It was my first naked bike ride (and if you know me you know I'm not big on bikes) so I took pictures. The onslaught of the Burnside Bridge. The intersection of 2nd and Burnside, and a bunch of naked people. What, you don't want to get naked and ride your tall bike through the city sometimes? Another night on the…

Rain Day Survival Guide

If the past few weeks of “summer” are any indication, there’s a good chance that your Hood trip this year is gonna get rained on. Windells session one had a banner two days of sun, and with High Cascade starting up, it doesn’t feel like things are getting better anytime soon. But don’t worry, there have been “rain days” since the inception of summer snowboarding, and even though you came here to work on your double corks and goggle tan, you’ll survive. Here are a just a few of the tried and true ways to ward off boredom on rainy days. 1. Go snowboarding anyway. Yes, you may want to…

Hump Day Finds Kyle Clancy

Kyle Clancy lives outside the snowboard industry's box. Here's a rider that bailed on Mack Dawg's program to film on his own terms with Grenade until he took matters completely into his own hands and filmed "Who Cares" under his own production company, Mongo Pro. Here's a rider that won Red Bull's Heavy Metal rail contest among the world's best jibbers and then never hit another street rail again. Here's a rider that's done what he needs to do to make sure he can shred as much as possible in any given season on his own terms. He's been called a lot of things: "The next Jason Ford." "The expensive…
