It Never Rains in Portland

If you haven't heard about Portlandia yet, you should first watch and enjoy this incredibly accurate portrayal of the fine city I call home. It's true, this place is a freak show, which is what makes it such a great place to live, and I'm happy I've come here to retire. Speaking of patently Portland things, yesterday I finally checked out the new DIY 'crete in Southeast. When I heard about this place (via the Mercury) it made me realize just how detached I've become from skateboarding in Portland. Seriously, how ridiculous is it that I only found out about this spot, mere feet from the former location of this…

Hump Day Reconnects with Colin Langlois

The fact he is wearing all black is NOT why they call him the Panther. They say in life it’s all who you know, and for Colin Langlois, it’s been a lot of the right people. From growing up riding in Vermont under the tutelage of some east coast legends, to finding his way to Mammoth to be part of the original Grenade crew, he has always had a bit of a knack for being in the right place, at the right time. Of course, it has helped that he has skills on a snowboard (and rollerblades too), and is a lot of fun to be around and ride with,…

Dirksen Derby: Day 2

When it comes to a banked slalom competition, the worst possible turn of events after a day of pounding rain would be a massive temperature drop. The mushy berms would turn to solid ice, and on a course such as the one for this year's Dirksen Derby, fly outs and tree collisions would be a given. This is a fun event for a good cause though, so even that bitch Mother Nature, who taunted the event with some of the worst possible weather on the first day, decided to cooperate, and that didn't happen! On December 12, things were warm and slushy and sun the even came out towards the…

The Magic: Recaptured

Snowboarding is fun. I mean, it kinda of goes without saying, but when you've been doing it for a long time, sometimes you can forget. The past few seasons I've admittedly been a bit snobby about things such as the conditions, which will happen when you live somewhere it gets really good (and also really bad). But this season, the magic is back. I've already ridden more times this year than last, and I actually have passes to multiple resorts. Well, I HAD passes, I should say. The unintended consequence of my refound love for snowboarding is I've completely reverted back to my 16-year-old self. This means, I am "trying"…

How to Make an AMAZING Web Edit

Someday, we're going to look back on this period in history and have no trouble remembering it because there is so very little that happens that is not captured on video. Barring a complete melt down of the Internet, we will have plenty of stuff to show to our kids and grand kids to go along with our "when I was your age" stories. It's going to be great. In the meantime, however, society is suffering from a web video overload. And most of those videos, especially the ones featuring snowboarding, are really bad. However, that should be qualified a bit: to you and your friends they are amazing, but…

2010/11: The Best Season to Snowboard, Ever

Something about human nature makes it hard for us to appreciate our current situation. There are a million cliched sayings about it (i.e. You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone), so you know it's true. But as salty and jaded as we are here at YoBeat, there's really nothing more annoying than reading an editorial about the good old days of snowboarding. You know, the days before the sport was ruined by the Olympics and so underground only the really cool people knew about it, blah, blah, blah. Talking about the past is great, and it's definitely important to know snowboard history and respect those who got us…

Party Time Nate’s Post Snowboarding Gourmet

You're a snowboarder, which means you are either broke, or pretending to be. No matter how little money you have though, you probably still like to eat on a regular basis, and chances are, you hit the drive through more than you like to admit. And why the hell not? It's cheap and easy, and it sure does taste good after a long day of 'boarding. The same old fast food can get mighty boring though, so with a little inspiration from fancyfastfood.com, Party Time Nate set out to create a gourmet meal with a few things we picked up on the drive down from the mountain. If you'd like…

The Darkside of Hump Day with Danny Larsen

Life on the dark side. Photo: Kevin Winkel/Courtesy K2 Snowboarding No matter your opinion on the importance of full length videos in the snowboard industry these days, it's hard to deny that a great video part can make someone's career. I didn't think much of Danny Larsen before I saw this year's Pirate's Movie "Hooked," but his three-or-so minute section quickly changed all that for me. After claiming it as the stand out, on account of his badassness and the fact I could pronounce his name, social media soon connected me with the man himself. I thought he only retweeted me because I said he was good in my review,…
