Since I got a good deal on Taco Shells at Target, a taco night was inevitable and last night was the night! I stopped by Safeway to get some Morning Star Farms crumbles and take advantage of the sale (3.49 each) plus my $1 off coupons, plus the extra $.50 savings I had loaded on to my card. Then I ended up with an extra bonus: the cashier I went to double doubled my coupons, giving me the full $2 off with with the doubler, even though I was only eligible for $1. Win. Crab-tastic!

Realistically, coupons are nothing more than a clever marketing tactic to get you to buy things you otherwise wouldn't. And lately, it's been working on me. It's really hard to turn down something that is free to a few cents, even if I normally wouldn't buy it, which was the case with the packages of imitation crab meat I picked up this weekend for $.50 (regular price 9.98, on sale 2/$3 and I had a $1 off coupon.) Target Recon Mission July 4, 2011

How do you celebrate America? Apparently I go to Target and buy things for very little money. I was inspired to try out couponing at Target by a deal on Ziploc containers, which we actually needed. I also printed out a few other Target coupons for veggie meat and crystal light, just in case! Honestly I wasn't even sure what the grocery selection was going to be. A healthy take on 4th of July eating

In addition to being within walking distance of my house, another cool thing about Fred Meyer is that you don’t need a membership card or cut coupons to get their store sales. Anyone walking in off the street will get all posted discounts (save for manufacturer’s coupons) at checkout. The one drawback of this system is that they don’t give you a “total $ saved” summary on your receipt like they do at Safeway,  making the rewards of shopping there more transparent, but it is what it is. The beginning of a new month means a new $10 off $50 purchase at Safeway coupon, which for me means a big shopping trip. Actually what happens is in an attempt to spend at least $50 I end up spending more like $100, but I get lots of stuff and it only happens once a month. This trip was no exception. For a total of $90.36 out of pocket, I saved 54% or $108.04. I gather to do this right you're supposed to plan ahead and stock pile, but I don't really see myself ever breaking the habit of almost-daily-pre-dinner grocery shopping. What good would couponing be if you never got anything you wanted to eat? No good, I tell you. One of my scores last weekend was a pork loin for $3.50, so I have been enjoying that for dinner the past few nights. One of the rules I've set for myself is only purchasing one Sunday Paper a week. There are a few reasons for this, but the main one is cost (others being hoarding prevention and my desire not to prolong the life of the print industry.) At $2 a pop, buying a bunch of papers could start to add up and negate the value of the coupons, right? That said, I'm not to proud to take coupons from other people's newspapers.
