2010/11: The Best Season to Snowboard, Ever

Something about human nature makes it hard for us to appreciate our current situation. There are a million cliched sayings about it (i.e. You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone), so you know it's true. But as salty and jaded as we are here at YoBeat, there's really nothing more annoying than reading an editorial about the good old days of snowboarding. You know, the days before the sport was ruined by the Olympics and so underground only the really cool people knew about it, blah, blah, blah. Talking about the past is great, and it's definitely important to know snowboard history and respect those who got us…

Party Time Nate’s Post Snowboarding Gourmet

You're a snowboarder, which means you are either broke, or pretending to be. No matter how little money you have though, you probably still like to eat on a regular basis, and chances are, you hit the drive through more than you like to admit. And why the hell not? It's cheap and easy, and it sure does taste good after a long day of 'boarding. The same old fast food can get mighty boring though, so with a little inspiration from fancyfastfood.com, Party Time Nate set out to create a gourmet meal with a few things we picked up on the drive down from the mountain. If you'd like…

The Darkside of Hump Day with Danny Larsen

Life on the dark side. Photo: Kevin Winkel/Courtesy K2 Snowboarding No matter your opinion on the importance of full length videos in the snowboard industry these days, it's hard to deny that a great video part can make someone's career. I didn't think much of Danny Larsen before I saw this year's Pirate's Movie "Hooked," but his three-or-so minute section quickly changed all that for me. After claiming it as the stand out, on account of his badassness and the fact I could pronounce his name, social media soon connected me with the man himself. I thought he only retweeted me because I said he was good in my review,…

YoBeat Internship Training

RJ enjoys a nice cold glass of milk on a YoBeat field trip to Patti's Homeplate It's the dream of many young snowboarders: the industry internship. We established awhile ago that interns will save the snowboard industry, and with the inexplicable increased popularity of YoBeat these days, we were in need of some extra help. So we hired a young chap named RJ Sweet. He comes in every day after school and does all the crap we don't want to deal with. However, before we could really admit to having RJ on staff, he needed a little hazing. So we brought him up to Timberline for a day of intern…

Mt Hood Meadows Almost Opening Day

I have a self-diagnosed condition called "Opening Day Anxiety." It's not that I'm not excited, it's just that I start thinking about everything involved in going snowboarding -- the lines, the drive, putting on gear, being cold -- and I talk myself out of it. It's a serious issue and I'm working through it. ODA is my official excuse for missing the official opening day of Mt. Hood Meadows 2010 on November 20th. I heard it was amazing. A who's who of snowboarding! Shane Flood was there! The CAPiTA crew was there! (I assume) Ahmon Stamps was there! The snow was light and the coverage was great for a week…

My mom used to get my dad the new Warren Miller movie every year for Christmas. My parents, you see, were recovering ski bums, and having moved from Idaho to Vermont to save me from the Mormons, they missed “real skiing.” These movies, I guess, were the best connection they had. I was young when Warren Miller used to make movies anyone would want to buy, but I remember them being less about skiing and more about a story. Sometimes they were a bit cheesy, but my dad seemed to enjoy them. Watching the TGR production “Deeper” reminded me of this for some reason. There was nothing cheesy about Jeremy…

Modern Snowboard Marketing in Three Easy Steps

Even after reading the simple list of ideas put forth in our "How To Get OUT of the Snowboard Industry" post, you may not have been able to pull the trigger, and find yourself in the position to be marketing for a medium-to-large snowboard brand this season. It’s hard, because you’re kind of lazy, you still don’t really get it, and the unnamed backer you're working for pays you barely more than a living wage under the guise of the “bad economy” and that fact that you “love snowboarding.” On top of that, your budget got cut again, so after paying for all the necessary things such as a team,…

Pirates Hijack Windells; Premiere Hooked

Tim Windell approved. On a dark and stormy November 6th, Pirates Movie Production North American tour embarked on B.O.B., the quaint little indoor skatepark at Windells Snowboard Camp, much to the delight of the residents of nearby Sandy and Welches. They brought with them plenty of booty for pillaging, as well as a DVD of Stop! Hammertime from Six Eleven films to show as a warm up. As you've likely been to a few premieres yourself, or read about at least 20 or so already this year, instead of telling you more about snowboard videos and product tosses, I offer you a pirate joke. Q: Why did the Pirates go…
