One last issue…

This morning I got an email from Bill McCaffray, publisher of Alliance Multimedia, a.k.a. my boss. It just said "blog about the new wakeskate mag" in the subject and thanks in the body. While he was probably referring to a blog on Alliancewake.com and not here, I am doing both. Hopefully this one will be more interesting than the other though. The new issue of Alliance Wakeskate went live last night. Actually, we were trying to launch a completely new site at the end of February, but as things often seem to go, it didn't happen. The panic solution for how long the site was actually going to take to…

Food and internets

The big news of the day is I updated Yobeat.com. If you don't know, Yobeat is the site I have been doing with my friend Rachel for more than 10 years. I update it about once a month, and usually it just includes a photo that has already been published somewhere else and some random ramblings in our analog so i can justify putting today's date on it. Other than that I have been cooking a lot lately. I get out of the habit of making my own food when I am traveling a lot, and I always get psyched when I get to be home for long enough to…

Cat-ciphex

Ever since I got this blog there are two topics I have been threatening to cover, but have yet to get around to. I figure today is the day! First is Aciphex. When you look at the word Aciphex, it really doesn't have the same affect as when you hear it said outloud on a commercial during a HGTV daytime show. There you are, minding your own business, when all of a sudden the TV voice is saying "Ass-effects." And he's totally serious about it. Now obviously the makers of Aciphex, which is actually a heart burn drug and not to control gas as one would assume, realized that this…

Contest Coverage

I must say I was a bit disappointed with the stories I read on the Holy Oly this year. Future had already assigned some dude I'd never heard of to write theirs, so I just made the video. The dude's story turned out to be a two paragraph inside joke that he didn't bother to explain until someone called him out in the comments. It wasn't great. Ok, and actually, that's the only story I read until Dave Schiff posted this little gem on the Grenade site. I even let him use my photos in exchange for like, 100 pairs of gloves. But anyway, it's great. Today I have been…

It’s still Spring…

...but all the sun hasn't made the "kids" any smarter. Ben and I have been on a serious skate mission (though today I took off to build galleries and do real work). Yesterday we hit up Vancouver, which is typically known for being over run with little ones. As expected it was, but these kids just so happened to be especially entertaining. Since I had just gotten a new camera (mine crapped out after less than a month but they let me trade it for a new one) I figured I should probably film. Here is the result.

Memory Lane

I am sorting through four years of old photos, trying to make galleries for this here site. In the process I have learned a few things, the main one being that I used to be really terrible at shooting wakeskating. I mean, we are back in the 10d days (I am now up to 40d) but the focus, composition, and other basic photographic elements were not really happening. (I was just informed that I still suck at taking photos, sometimes I just get lucky.) The good news though, is that I have come across a few photos that make me smile and think of the "good old days." (yeah, two…

Holy Oly Revival!

My parents came to visit, so I decided to take them to the Holy Oly. They like beer, so I figured it would work out. We went up early to do a little night riding at the Summit at Snowqualmie, which turned out to be amazing. Apparently if it rains all day, then stays warm, the snow is perfect. My dad was claiming the best Friday night of his life, that is until we were at the bar eating dinner and the worst band ever started to play, really, really loudly. But it was still a good night. Things only got better for the event the next day. The sun…

Before and After

I missed out on the best skate weekend of the winter to put new floors in my house. Granted it was nice to be able to stain the trim and cut the boards outside instead of cooped up in the garage so it wasn't all bad. Oh yeah, and I have amazing, beautiful new floors now. Here's the HGTV-style before and after. THEN: NOW!

Fake Spring

Every year Portland does this. The spring fake out. For a couple days in the middle of winter it's warm and sunny. I definitely fell for it this year. I mowed the lawn and even planted some flowers. I have my fingers crossed that when it gets cold again (which it will) it's not so cold, or for so long that they all die. And of course the perk of fake spring is skateboarding! I did some of that and man was it fun.

Why?

I am not opposed to people cashing in on action sports. In fact, I like to cash in myself. However, it really bothers me when these people, who have no real background, passion, or knowledge, try to be cool. Lat34's Life of Ryan recaps not withstanding, I recently came across this, which without mentioning any actual names, is from the people who do Sports Center. Yeah. "We think it was either the tech guys bonking the server while ollieing over it, or the wet snowboard gear that dripped over all the hardware that is causing this problem. Your page isn't available right now. but we're on it and we're working…
