Firing Squad: Dec 1, 2009

November 30 is the official opening of buck season in rural Pennsylvania, and since Zimmerman is a mean old man, he is out in the woods with a gun. That leaves me to pick a photo. Perhaps it’s good, after all, he went a little bit rogue last week with his pick. So I scanned through the archives and found something a little different for this week. I am not sure how it ties in with the challenger, but really, it’s just about which one you like better. So choose.

  1. Really?

Voted for the Challenger, despite some hesitancy …. Though the rider is in there twice, I feel like that decisive moment is still missing. Love the lighting and fruity color splash though. Creative multi-feature setup. Good frame.

  2. matias

kind of a weird panoramic photomontage, but it looks good. As already said, the moment doesn’t seem like the best one possible.. and I didn’t get why the rider’s in there twice. but it looks good, so whatever

  3. The bottom one makes me want some candy for some weird reason.

  4. i like the colors in the challenger, but i feel like the action is too far away for what is going on… brooke is working this firing squad? does that mean last weeks shit show of comments pushed zim over the edge and away from yobeat?

  5. Champ HANDS DOWN! …unless you like photos of back smiths

  6. When was the last time one of these photos were actually shot on the mountain, all of the shots on this contest might as well be shot in a studio.

  7. jw

The challenger is a cool idea for sure, but they didn’t get the money shot, and for that reason I can’t vote for it.

  8. un natural

If you are american/english your eye is trained to look left to right, based on the way we naturally read. The challengers shot feel un-natural because you see the back smith before you figure out what is going on. Like the blue lighting just throws me off. Go Champ

  9. HBake

i wish there was one more of him in the middle, it seems weird to me that they are so spaced out. also, there’s no such thing as a back smith in snowboarding.

  10. AndrewN

The CHAMP is just TOO GOOD

  11. Jason Tackitt

The lighting in the challenger’s photo’s pretty creative but I’m having a hard time figuring out what the rider is doing. Good idea though.

  12. shredface

can the challenger photog clarify if it is one exposure or a photoshop creation? i voted for it thinking it was one exporsure because thats hard to do.

  13. shredface-
The challenger’s photo could possibly have been done with a PW on different channels; just have to be quick about it.

  14. Gary Tyler

why is there shingles on a wall. that spot is stupid. the snow is dirty too. and the tree bark is green.

the second photo is also stupid. the sky is all dark and they forgot to shovel the snow out of the parking lot. i like the color though. it’s like the cops just showed up. fuck cops.

  15. coleatencio

gary- the first picture sucks cuz they got dirty snow? and shingles? looks like a typical tahoe cabin. and that bark looks sick. the rider is on point in this shot… second picture the dood is in a back smith or not even on the feature yet really.. shoulda kept shooting.. i voted for the champ cuz atleast hes doing a real trick in the picture.

  16. amy

Whenever I look at the champ I always think it looks all scrunched up.
Challenger may not have spot on (or any?) tricks going on, but it’s a little more interesting. I’d like to hear how it was executed for sure.
I’m still enjoying the “they both suck” option. I hope it wins some week.

  17. tuckercarlson

i wanna know what jimbo thinks

  18. Ryan

Im with the previous comment about how none of the recent photos have come from mountains. Not that I don’t like seeing people wheelie down metal bars and ride roofs and such, just that I appreciate a good cliff drop or method in the woods a lot better. So I’m gunna keep voting they both suck for now.

  19. scott

ya…can we see a mountain next time?

  20. Dave Brewer is Dr. Scholls.

  21. Haha just noticed one of the tags is Tahoe vs. Utah. Tahoe could never fight Utah, we might circle each other a few times with our fixies but both states would be too worried about getting their tight pants dirty.

  22. Really?

Mountains … Do people still shred those?

  23. the pop kids

im going the the challenger because its dave and this is for sure a popularity contest duh

  24. Number two sure does suck. Could totally use a 14% magenta color reduction. Not to mention the highlights are +1 stop over saturated. I don’t quite understand the champ, never seen nobody board on a roof before, the snow could be a bit browner

  25. Jason Tackitt

Mr. Fong: Tahoe’s not a state and there’s not too many fixies here either.

  26. hater

They both suck. But the challenger sucks less.

  27. BZ

The Challenger just probably took two different pics and put them together to make one image.
And yes if this is a popularity contest Dave B. will win. He is almost as tight as the jeans all the “scene” kids where out here in Utah.

  28. BZ

    were out here in Utah*

  29. My photo is not all that great. I just wanted a fair fight…No facebook blasts telling people to vote for me here. Just which ever photo they enjoyed more. Even most of my friends voted against me it seems. It is what it is.

  30. daniel

yo beezy.. i think the word youre looking for is “wear”

  31. So I follow this site pretty regularly. Enough to know that if the champ wins this week that his photo will be put into the champions gallery. That being said, I have to say that his photo is absolutely not worthy of being there. Seriously, if it weren’t for all of the facebook posts and homie votes, this week should’ve seen this shot go down. No offense Brewer, but the shot they chose for yours is probably some of your d-grade stuff. Had they chosen some of your better work, you’d be walking away the winner easily. The champ should be stoked that Zim took some vacay time and allowed Brooke’s semi-retarded ass to choose some psychedelic photoshop-layering b/s. Seriously, this section of this site blows because it’s obviously a fraternity party. Only vote for your boys, I get it. Jimbo fucked up and Zim played the funny card and ran his piece of shit shot when a legit photog could’ve had their turn. I say, in all fairness, that the champ be subjected to another week before an induction to the champ gallery occurs. Champ, wouldn’t you say that’s a fair call? you know your shot isn’t worthy of that gallery. I’m sure some, if not all of the 4-week winners, would agree.

  32. word

    word
    but give me a break
who is going to willingly turn down dakine gear

  33. I am willing to go for week 5. Maybe next week the both suck option will finally win.

  34. Steezy

I agree with “just saying what people are probably thinking”

  35. I am pretty bummed at the selection. Sorry Brooke, but the challenger doesn’t match up. The champ is decent, but like Just Sayin mentioned, it’s not Champ Gallery worthy. I wish the Challenger would have cropped their photo down to the shot on the left. It’s much more believable. Can’t wait to see what pops up tomorrow.
