Watch: Saving my house from evil trees!

On Friday morning, two giant white pines towered precariously over my house.

Next to them, a smaller grove of maples, hemlock and an oak leaned, fighting for nutrients vs. these fast-growing, parasitic beasts.

Underneath, a crab apple tree I named “Twiggy” fought for sunlight.

Road adjacent, another crab apple grew into the power lines and scraped every truck that drove by.

When trees grow where they shouldn’t, it’s dangerous. After 70-some years, these seven trees waved violently with every storm that ripped through the Marble Valley.

So, despite the cost and my deep love of trees, they had to go 👋

Once cut, we saw they were rotting from the inside out. And for the record, behind my house, 1,000 more of the same trees live on.

Over three days, the best crew in Rutland cut and hauled away the trees. Once cut, the wood was taken by a local Vermonter for processing. (Fun fact: his license plate simple reads “John” and he may have been one of the first John’s to ever own a car in Vermont.)

Before you get your panties in a bunch about how I killed the trees in a time when we’re trying to reduce carbon in the atmosphere, appreciate that this was necessary and these beautiful trees will live again as beautiful furniture, a heat source or even a new house someday.

Special thanks to Lear Plowing and Tree Service 🙌👏
