I though this would be a fitting follow up to my last post, filled with useful advice as to how to bolster a career. You see, this is a good example of what NOT to do, but man, it made me laugh so hard. Perhaps I’ve mentioned the relaunch of YoBeat (ten times.) Well the thing about YoBeat is it is purposely brutal. Snowboarding needs a honest, independent publication, and well, I’m not always known for my positivity. Yobeat is a place to say exactly what I think and feel. As I’ve gotten older I’ve mellowed slightly, so sometimes I may try a little too hard to be edgy. Such was the case with an interview sent to me by an “action sports” site about the relaunch. I really couldn’t resist bashing it (I mean, look at the questions,) and shockingly, they opted not to run it. But as I said, it made me laugh, so here is the unabridged version.
Where did the idea of Yobeat.com/Making fun of Snowboarding come from?
Rachel and I started Yobeat because we wanted to make a zine and AOL gave out free webspace. It evolved into “making fun of snowboarding” because well, snowboarding is stupid.
You started Yobeat.com when you were 15? How is something so profound as starting one of the first true snowboarding blog sites, on the radar of a young teenager?
I was a child genius. Also I had magic powers and could see into the future and knew that “blogging” would one day exist and if I started early I could be one of the first.
What were some of the challenges you faced when you first started Yobeat.com?
Well one time I tried to use Yobeat to get free tickets at Shawnee Peak in Pennsylvania and they denied me. I bet now they would just be begging to get on Yobeat.
All time best interview?
Obviously Luke Wynen. Why else would we have interviewed him twice. I mean, no one cared about him back then either, so must have had something profound to say.
Worst interview? (Are you allowed to say?)
I am going to have to go with this one.
What’s the motivation behind bringing Yobeat.com back to life?
Since Future went out of business, I needed a reason to get my free season’s pass. Also I have an intern and he looked bored.
What can readers look forward to in the re-birth?
I guess I should have known people took Yobeat more seriously than I did because I was still getting free CDs and was on Nike’s promo list. So I guess this time I might take things a little more seriously. I even wrote an edit plan on the back of one of the pages of my cat-of-the-day calendar.
Damn, Nike VIP? mad fresh. holalalalallllaaa
