Now that I have decided I will be 25 for the rest of my life, it’s important that I keep up with what the kids are into. But I felt like a real failure when my short attention span and general busyness prevented me from appreciating that 90210 was coming back. Yeah, I’d seen the ads and heard rumors about the return of Brenda, etc., but it hadn’t really set in what this all meant. It wasn’t until Sarah Morrison responded to my IM yesterday with “90210 starts tonight” that I realized I should be really excited about this. I mean, I loved the original. We even had a party in my dorm room for the last episode.

So now that I realized I should care, I got home and set the DVR. Record series. Check. Before I could watch though, the Republican National Convention was on. I hadn’t intented to watch, but since it superceeded Jeopardy, I figured why not, and am I glad I did. The RNC is better than an episode of Saturday Night Live! They even got the guy from Law and Order to host. And then the baby momma drama, I mean, it might has well have been on the CW! But I’d have to say the highlight of the night was one line, “They broke both his arms, but they didn’t break his honor.” Thanks dub-yah, I don’t even know what that means, but coming from you anything sounds profound, right? One more quick thought and then back to the point. I’ll admit I hadn’t heard about McCain’s VP pick until last night, and I am still very confused. Either it is a pathetic attempt to woo Hillary supporters, or McCain really, really doesn’t want to get elected. I think I’ll follow the Republican campaign for comedic value, but I’m definitely voting for Barry. Like, duh.

Ok back to 90210. So it seems that the producers have taken a cue from another great show, and decided to make a new version, with some old favorites, and some new characters to spice things up. It’s pretty much the same as the original but totally different. I mean, there is a black character. The family came from the only place more ridiculous than Minnesota, Kansas! The most misguided of all the original cast, Kelly (who joined a cult and got hoked on coke before it was hip) is a, duh duh duh, a guidance counselor. The new Brenda has HUGE hair. Oh and in an effort to woo action sports enthusiasts, Rad! star Lori Loughlin plays Cindy Walsh, I mean, whatever her name is.

The premiere episode clocked in at two hours. But I didn’t even get though the credits before I was squealing with glee. Silver! That’s Mel and Kelly’s mom’s daughter. NAT! I was right back in high school, and everything was great. But after about 20 minutes, I realized I was just watching a bad WB show. Two hours may have been a bit much, even for me. Will I continue to watch all season though? Of course, I have a DVR and it’s already set. Will the show make it past one season? Probably, since the CW doesn’t seem to kill shows. Do I really feel younger when I’m watching it? No, just sort of pathetic. But what can you do. I love the new TV season!

If you’ve been to my house, then you’ve no doubt commented on the neighborhood eyesore, a.k.a. the Apostolic Faith church. When I was house shopping, I almost didn’t come look at my house. Not because of its proximity to the church, but because it really didn’t look like much in the pictures. But I figured why not, and the real estate agent brought me in from the east, so I never laid eyes on the church until after I had already toured my house and decided it was the one.

Of course, when I left the house, I made it a point to drive out the opposite direction to check out the neighborhood. That’s when I noticed something strange. So if you haven’t been to my house, you are probably wondering what the big deal is. I mean, it’s just a church, right? Well, not exactly. It’s the world headquarters of this faith, which prior to moving here, I’d never heard of. I did some research and turns out it’s not so big in the US, but huge in Nigeria. The church property consists of almost two full city blocks. Several houses, a church, an office building, and of course, the scariest part: jesus camp! The camp has RV parking spots, a ton of tiny sheds and a tabernacle with “Jesus the light of the world” written in huge letters on it. Here’s a picture I stole off their website.

So yeah, it’s a little weird, but my house is removed enough from the action, and I’ve been here long enough to just ignore it. Anyway, directly across the street from me lives the grand pubah, or god, if you prefer. The church owns all the houses on the other side of my street (except for one) and the church leader happens to live in the one closest to me. It’s cool. I don’t bother him, he doesn’t bother me. In fact I’ve never spoken to him or anyone else in his family. We live a wonderful mutually oblivious existence. Except for today. Which brings me to why I’ve decided to write about this now.

I spent the day outside. We were painting the siding we replaced and I raked up leaves, etc. What’s important though, is what the neighbors were doing. They were also up to something outside, but what was unusual, was the loud music blaring from their yard. Church people are usually not music people, so it was weird to begin with. But then I listened for a minute and realized it was mellow jesus rock, just really loud. Now to each his own, and if you want to be down with G.O.D. good for you. Not for me, but whatever. However the Jesus rock was just too much. I mean, not only is is about Jesus, but it really, really sucks, musically. I debated calling the police and complaining, mostly for irony’s sake, but then decided to just go inside instead. End of the story.

After the work was done we headed into Woodstock to eat some burritos, and we saw this:

(not my picture, obviously. I failed to take one.)

I guess it just seems like a lot of Jesus for one day, especially for me. Perhaps someone is trying to tell me something?

I am a big fan of making web videos. Not so much of watching them, but I love to make them and post them and then watch the traffic add up. But my issue with Youtube is that whole 100 mb limit. Unless your video is 30 seconds long, it’s near impossible to make it look like anything other than crap when you compress it to under 100 mb. And never fail I would export my finished video to find it was 101 mb, meaning I would have to lower the quality even more to get it to load. It was a travesty really. But everything has changed now that I’ve discovered Vimeo. I posted my first video on there last night, the YoBeat tour of Holden Outerwear and holy crap! It’s amazing. Here’s the video, but be sure to check out the full coverage on YoBeat.

I though this would be a fitting follow up to my last post, filled with useful advice as to how to bolster a career. You see, this is a good example of what NOT to do, but man, it made me laugh so hard. Perhaps I’ve mentioned the relaunch of YoBeat (ten times.) Well the thing about YoBeat is it is purposely brutal. Snowboarding needs a honest, independent publication, and well, I’m not always known for my positivity. Yobeat is a place to say exactly what I think and feel. As I’ve gotten older I’ve mellowed slightly, so sometimes I may try a little too hard to be edgy. Such was the case with an interview sent to me by an “action sports” site about the relaunch. I really couldn’t resist bashing it (I mean, look at the questions,) and shockingly, they opted not to run it. But as I said, it made me laugh, so here is the unabridged version.

Where did the idea of Yobeat.com/Making fun of Snowboarding come from?
Rachel and I started Yobeat because we wanted to make a zine and AOL gave out free webspace. It evolved into “making fun of snowboarding” because well, snowboarding is stupid.

You started Yobeat.com when you were 15? How is something so profound as starting one of the first true snowboarding blog sites, on the radar of a young teenager?
I was a child genius. Also I had magic powers and could see into the future and knew that “blogging” would one day exist and if I started early I could be one of the first.

What were some of the challenges you faced when you first started Yobeat.com?
Well one time I tried to use Yobeat to get free tickets at Shawnee Peak in Pennsylvania and they denied me. I bet now they would just be begging to get on Yobeat.

All time best interview?
Obviously Luke Wynen. Why else would we have interviewed him twice. I mean, no one cared about him back then either, so must have had something profound to say.

Worst interview? (Are you allowed to say?)
I am going to have to go with this one.

What’s the motivation behind bringing Yobeat.com back to life?
Since Future went out of business, I needed a reason to get my free season’s pass. Also I have an intern and he looked bored.

What can readers look forward to in the re-birth?
I guess I should have known people took Yobeat more seriously than I did because I was still getting free CDs and was on Nike’s promo list. So I guess this time I might take things a little more seriously. I even wrote an edit plan on the back of one of the pages of my cat-of-the-day calendar.

I don’t know when it happened, but it seems I’ve become one of the people in snowboard “journalism” others look up to. When I was just starting out it was people like Dave England, Dave Carnie and yeah, even Pat Bridges for me. I still have a hard time feeling good about comparing myself to these people (and not just cause I am a girl) but it seems like are some people out there who would. One thing all these guys shared, other than being funny dudes, was that I was a little bit afraid of them. Pat used to invite me to breakfast and I would show up to find him smoking cigs and playing pro boarders in his underwear, so that’s the main reason he made me nervous… But mostly, I think it’s that they were doing what I wanted to do, and doing it well. I remember I called Dave England for the first time working on a feature for Crossrocket, and as I fumbled to explain who I was, he nonchalantly replied, “Yeah, I know who you are.” It was probably one the highlights of my career.

Anyway, I guess now that I’ve got some years under my belt, and some steady work (although I could always use more!) I am willing and qualified to give some advice. So here are my top 5 tips for “making it” as a freelance writer in action sports.

1. Don’t ever expect anyone to edit you. This is not to say you will not be edited, and often for the worse, but don’t assume someone else will fact check. Check the spelling of everyone’s names. Proofread! Run spell check. Basically, turn in everything you write ready to be published. That way nothing can slip through the cracks.
2. Practice what you preach. Action sports are about passion and it’s much easier to gain respect if you can keep up. Seriously. And if you’re not good, at least have fun doing it.
3. Go the extra mile. Now I am one of the laziest people I know, but it’s no reason not to actually put effort into your stories. Offer readers something they don’t already know. Do what the editor wants and then do a little bit more. Worse case scenario it gets taken out, but it will likely cut down your workload over all: chances are it won’t come back for revisions.
4. Pay attention to deadlines. Honestly, every action sports “deadline” is negotiable, but you’ll still get more work if editors know you’re going to get it done, and close to on time.
5. Be cool. With iChat (the best invention ever for freelancing) it can be easy to become a nuisance. Use it to check in and remind people you exist, but if you start getting brief (or no) responses, back off. In person, don’t be afraid to talk and show your personality, but don’t be annoying. Sure, you can be a great writer, but if no one wants to deal with you, you’ll never get any work.

I said five so that’s the list, but one more in conclusion: Diversify. When freelancing never put all your eggs in one basket, it’s called job security.

How does a bad trip get even worse? When it gets really, really expensive. Around day three things were ok, after all, it was almost over. I thought I might escape from Canada unscathed. The contest had just wrapped up and I was joyfully skipping to my car. Since wakeskaters are all 19 and can’t rent cars, a few of them had asked me for a ride back to the hotel. I set my camera bag, tripod and water housing on the ground next to my car so that the teens could put their boards and bags in the trunk first, then sat in the car. I half forgot about my camera bag, and half assumed that they would stick it in the trunk for me. When they both got in the car and the trunk was closed, I started up the Yarris and went to pull out. Then I heard a strange crunching noise. We got out of the car to see my tripod snapped into three pieces and the other two bags precariously close to the tires. Awesome.

My fisheye lens is obviously toast, but I’m still not sure on the status of the camera body. Might be bent, might be ok. I have to shoot with it and see. Maybe my photos will just be really, really artsy from now on. Well, like the song says “Blame Canada!”

I’ve been on a few bad trips. They all have some things in common, such as limited/poor selection in music, weird foreign places, and a bunch of assholes. I am on another trip that may go down in the anals of my vacation memories, this one to outside Toronto. I am here for a wakeskate contest, where I am pretty much the sole member of the press. Well, there are other people here but no one seems to be working that hard. I’ve been sitting in the hotel bar (there’s no internet in our rooms) for at least six hours. Editing, writing, video, photo, etc. All I’ve got to show for it so far is one “dude” who didn’t get my hilarious and amazing frontside boardslide gallery.

I shouldn’t be so negative. More of the people here are awesome. I sort of feel important. And when I finish a web video I get a little bit excited. Of course then it’s 3 hours of compression ’til I can put it online and get hated on by kids, but what can you do?

So I was positive for a second. Now I am going to vent. Here’s the list.

-I got here a day early to go ride/shoot. Things took an early turn for the worse when I missed my flight, thereby getting in too late to pick up my rental car. The result was an entire wasted day. Awesome.

-The hotel we are staying at is ghetto. I am a hotel snob and this non-shutting doors, gnarly carpet, and not even free bar soap does not cut it. I mean, it could be worse. I have my own bed and even my own room, but the “cabin” is just sort of gross and really expensive (not that I am paying) and there is other general weirdness here.

-Oh my rental car! For $370 I don’t even get power locks or windows!

-Yesterday I rode on the boat to shoot lazy photos. I got forced into rope duty and they were playing Sublime the whole time. It was basically the worst thing ever.

-Our money is worth less than Canada’s now. What is this world coming to?

Two more days. Then I’m going home!

This whole YoBeat thing is sort of inconvenient, since I now have ANOTHER website to update. But I just trained intern to update, since I am leaving for Canada tomorrow and will be in wakeskate world for the whole week. Hopefully he doesn’t blow it and I will be able to delegate more of the updates to him. Either way, I actually put some effort into today’s post, about the Oregon Trifecta. Meaning I edited a video. It’s not my best work, but it has it’s moments. You can check out the whole YoBeat post here.

I also did a blog for Fuel.tv which is a lot wordier. You can probably tell I wrote this one first for that reason. The same photos, but some deep thoughts, so check this one out too.

I also joined Twitter. It’s like a webpage just for facebook status updates but now you can stalk me yet another way if you feel so inclined. http://twitter.com/brookegeery

I was an early adopter of the internet, and like any one who’s been around something for awhile, I think it’s crazy how much it’s changed. But one thing hasn’t changed, and that’s how much fun it is for some people to be anonymous assholes. I’ll admit, I used to try and stir shit up in the Snowboarding Online chat rooms when I was a teen, so I understand exactly what is going through people’s heads. For the most part it’s harmless, but after all the intern drama on Alliancewakeskate.com, one of my contribs sent me this article and I got a little scared. I mean, I like my identity and good credit. But hopefully none of my internet haters are that serious!

Anyway, most of the time I brush off the haters. Right now you would think I’d be especially good at it because of all the positive response to Yobeat. But for whatever reason, yesterday it got to me. Nate suggested I start a “burn of the week,” but unfortunately, none of the haters are very clever. So I just wanted to complain about it for a minute instead.

In better news, Yobeat is awesome. Everyone is stoked and I finally got a chance to write my bamboo-hoo story. We also got talked about on almost every site that would remotely care and I even got interviewed for Fuel.tv. Sadly though, I think I may have been a bit harsh with some of my answers, so they are probably never going to use it. It made me laugh though, so I will give them a few more days and then post the whole thing on here.

I now I have a dumpster at my house, so this weekend will be spent throwing stuff out, and hopefully making it to trifecta at least once. Here’s a photo I shot of it last year that I like.

Another fun weekend of home improvement. In order to avoid the massive hype that would surely ensue after the launch of YoBeat, I figured it would be best to just stay home anyway. That and I had a pile of lumber and a bunch of new windows just sitting around. Now if you know me, you may know I am sort of a spazz and patience isn’t one of my better qualities. Instead of waiting until I had everything and doing it all at once, I insisted on putting the french doors as soon as we got them a few weeks ago. Apparently this t-111 siding has to lock together and long story short, the stuff we’d already done made the new stuff a bit trickier. But there’s only one little chip that no one other than Holmes on Homes would ever notice, and he’d be too preoccupied by the fact we didn’t get any permits anyway. Here are the fruits of this weekend’s labor.

We have created one awesomely big pile of garbage, and we ran out of siding so now the house is looking extra white trash. But check out those new windows!

Since i am more useless than usual with my elbow and all, I wasn’t much use on the heavy construction. I did, however, make a neat rock garden and planted a bunch of annuals in place of the vegetables in the garden that have already come and gone.

If you want extreme stuff go to Yobeat. I updated it again today. People seem stoked. I might really keep it going this time.
