Party Time Product Review: Gloves Part 3

Out of all the Party Time Product reviews, the glove reviews have definitely been the lamest. I mean, who really cares if you can eat tacos in gloves? But for the final test of the Drop, Dakine and Bonfire gloves we think we really nailed what matters. We lit them on fire. So now you'll know once and for all if you catch on fire, which gloves will protect you the best. No Party Time Nates were harmed in the filming of this test, however, you should still not actually try this one at home. [media id=34 width=555 height=320]

Who’s Paying for This?

Since starting a food blog I have been asked the same questions over and over, so I figured I might as well write a blog and answer them. 1) Why are you doing this? Are you trying to get free food? The first part of this question is answered here, but basically, we want to eat lunch at every restaurant on Hawthorne because it's a fun project and nothing else. Everyone wants a free lunch, but as you may have heard, there is no such thing. So no, we are not trying to get free food. 2) Who is paying for this? We are. Jared and I alternate who pays…

5 Things This Week that were more Important/Interesting than Snowboarding

If there is one thing this week has proven to me, it's that people take snowboarding WAY too seriously. Don't get me wrong, I love snowboarding. It is a fun way so spend time during the winter months, an amazing excuse to travel, a bond I share with some of my best friends, and also a major source of income for me over the past years. But let's be realistic. It's only snowboarding. We are riding toys down mountains. It's not exactly the most important thing in the world. So in light of that, here's my list of things that have happened just this week that are more interesting/important than…

Mio Sushi

3962 SE Hawthorne Blvd www.miosushi.com Date of visit: October 9, 2009 Cost for two (with tip) $36.10 Sometimes at the end of a long, hard week, you just have to treat yourself to a really bitchin' lunch. For me, sushi is the ultimate extravagance because I am 100% incapable of doing anything less than completely over ordering. In fact the only real difference between sushi lunch and such dinner is I am much less likely to opt for a saki bomb mid day, so I guess that makes it a bit more affordable. Mio has been a favorite sushi place in Portland for awhile now, and actually has several locations…

Let’s Recap

- I went to Burton's annual employee/friends/industry party 'cause they invited me - I wrote a story, because that's what i do http://www.yobeat.com/2009/10/jakes-fall-bash-recession-proof/ - Some kids at Burton didn't like it -Burton called demanding I take it down. My friend thought he was going to get fired, so i did. -Then i wrote this https://brookegeery.com/?p=687 -the same kids at Burton turned it into a Burton bash fest thanks to their stupid comments - so Jared wrote this http://www.jaredsouney.com/2009/10/burton-snowboards-control-denied/ -and a few other bloggers have written about it as well.. -Todd Richards even weighed in http://www.yobeat.com/2009/10/feelings-with-todd-richards/ -I talked to my friend, who had smoothed things out. So I put the story…

My First Snowboard: A True Story

For years I have maintained my first snowboard was a Burton Ouija board. Back then, there was no cooler snowboard than this, with its moon and sun twin tips and conflicting yes/no message. And sure, I was about 4”6’ and 80 pounds, and the board was a 158, but damn it, that’s what I wanted everyone to know I rode in those earliest of days. But I have a secret. I think only saw that Burton Ouija board sitting next to my actual first board: a hot pink Funky. The snowboards both belonged to the daughter of a friend of my father, who was under some sort of house arrest/rehab…

Bridgeport Ale House

3632 SE Hawthorne Blvd Date of Visit: October 8, 2009 Price for 2 (with tip): $27 If this was a Happy Hour blog, I'd probably give Bridgeport Ale House an A- overall, but this is a lunch blog, and as lunch goes, it was a C, tops. The Hawthorne location, Bridgeport Ale House, is not to be confused with Bridgeport Brew Pub on NW Marshall, where I have also eaten on a previous occasion. The Ale House is an overall much smaller location, with a smaller menu selection. There is no bakery on the premises, just your basic upscale pub atmosphere. On my visit to the west side location I…

Pepino’s Fresh Mexican Grill

3832 SE Hawthorne Blvd http://www.pepinos.org/ Date of visit: Oct 7, 2009 Price for 2: $11.50 After a few days out off town, we opted against somewhere new and headed to Pepino's, by far one of my favorite lunch spots. The taqueria is quick, cheap, and one of the few places on Hawthorne with an actual parking lot. (If you've been to Hawthorne you know parking can be a real pain.) Unlike the nearby, over-hyped Por Que No, Pepino's is seriously cheap. I almost always go for the taqeria taco combo: two tacos, chips and a drink for $4.50. The tacos themselves are super basic. Two corn tortillas, meat (I get…

Why The Media is Failing

(And no, it's not the Internet's fault) I recently found myself in a little hot water. Without naming names, or going into specifics, I wrote a story that was deemed unacceptable by the parties involved. This is of course, not the first time this has happened (nor will it be the last), as I run a website that pokes fun at just about everything. But this time, the offended party happened to owe us money. So upon a threat to withhold money owed, I initially removed the post. Screw it, I got bills to pay. After a bit of thought though I realized, the money in question wasn't nearly enough,…
