One Down…

Lately I've been building a bunch of websites for people. I use wordpress exclusively, and am getting better at it with each project. It's a fun (albeit frustrating) new realm of work that is far more time consuming than I realize! It also takes a lot longer from start to finish than I am used to, what with my internet-sized attention span at all. For the past month or so I've been working on a project for my friend Clint Tompkins, a professional wakeskater who's started hand building boards in his garage in Texas. I offered to help make him a site so he'd have somewhere to sell and market…

Writing vs Editing

I have been trying to write this post for awhile now. Originally my angle was going to be if I thought I was a better writer or an editor, because it's very rare that someone is good at both. However, I decided that there was no way to write that honestly without sounding cocky while simultaneously writing an appropriate blog for my professional site that would not dissuade people from hiring me. So I've instead decided to instead to just talk about doing both and which I like more. Although I have been "the editor" of YoBeat since it started, the first 10-12 years included very little actual editing. But…

My, What a Busy Week!

Check out my full gallery of photos of this kid here. Today is culminating one of those weeks I feel like I've really outdone myself. In large part it is probably because I was out of town all last week so there was a good deal of catching up to be done.  It seems like I've been churning out an especially large amount of content, and what better way to create more content with it than to reblog it all! But when I actually sat down to find the stuff I've done this week, it turns out I'd only written two stories on YoBeat (the Art of the Board Hold…

It’s not about being right, it’s about being first!

This past weekend I found myself in a twitter battle with the WWA's Shawn Perry. At the first Toe Jam stop I had tweeted all the action, and the kids, as they say, were stoked. diana_decastro@alliancewakesk8 wow twitter is amazing and u also. thanks for the updates! ;p lakehippie@alliancewakesk8 I love the play by plays! I am at work but feel like I am right there with you!! Keep it up for us who can't be there!! So I wasn't at all surprised that just two weeks later the practice had been adopted by others looking to enthrall wakeskating's huge public. Unfortunately for me and my need to be first…

A Week Down South

I guess it officially took two weeks for this whole swine flu thing to blow over. I was really hoping it would last a bit longer, cause I have gotten a lot of mileage out of it terms of story angles. Of course, when you are traveling to the one state where someone has actually died from the virus, it's sort of a nobrainer, right? I ended up in Dallas, TX, even though the event I was planning on attending had been canceled due to fear of the Swine Flu. Since the ticket was already bought (and it would cost more to change it than rent a car) I figured…

Sunshine State of Mind

There are certain things I only really do when I am in Florida. Eat at Chipotle. Drink about 3 super sweet Dunkin Donuts Iced coffees a day. Listen to the terrible hip hop station. Get sunburned. Etc. But I think it's these things that keep me coming back (well that, and it's my job.) My Florida traditions have almost become guilty pleasures, some sort of alternate universe from my every day life. And as I become less interested in traveling (never thought it would happen, either) I think the fact that I have these routines makes it much less painful to be on the road. New for this trip, my…

Extra Funny Day

I have some days where I just can't put together a punchline. Today is not one of those days. I am doing a really amazing job at making fun of stuff and stealing funny jokes from others for my own benefit. Here's a quick run down. I received a Grenade Games press release this morning. Now I am not just going to post an ad for Monster and Grenade without some subtle shit talk. I killed it. A little bird forwarded me what may or may not be an inter office joke at Burton. It was funny, so I ran with it. I mean, my sense of humor doesn't lie,…

Blog Wars!

I have recently found myself engaged in a blog battle with photographer Bryan Soderlind. It all started because of a review I wrote about the highly-anticipated wakeskate video Fun Boots! In an attempt to spice things up, I opted to take the angle of how I made my boyfriend wait for action while I watched it, in order to illustrate how excited I was to see this movie. Bear, as he's known in the biz, decided to take my moment of vulnerability and run with it, posting this blog on his site. If you don't want to read, basically he said that I shouldn't ruin the mystique of lusting after…

A Scene from Texas

Captain's Log: Day 3 Still no sun. More gaps than you can shake a stick at. Clint is good at wakeskating, and a fun guy to have around. Full feature, video, etc. in the works. Look for it Wednesday. Please come out sun!

But…
