5 things: Halloween Edition

For this week and on this special day of fright, I’ve decided to grab 5 things I find to be truly scary. Here it is: the 5 Things Halloween Edition. Boo!

1. Rush Reports Hoax as Fact Rush Limbaugh picked up on a story from the obviously reliable blog Jumping in Pools, which stated that Obama’s actual college thesis dissed on the constitution. In Rush’s defense some other blogger had reported it as fact before he ran with it. Then, when Rush found egg on his face, he stood by the story saying something to the effect of, “well, it wasn’t real, but you know that’s how Obama feels anyway.” It’s hard to believe he didn’t pick up on the related Jumping in Pools expose “Is Michael Savage Gay?” But what’s really so scary about this? People listen to, respect and pay attention to this guy. Yep.

2. Dub-yah, Motivational speaker While other former Presidents start humanitarian causes or travel to Korea to free prisoners, Dub-yah has found his own way to help: By speaking at a motivational conference where the tickets were $4.95. I can imagine the speech. “Look at me, I’m a moron, and look what I’ve accomplished.” But it was probably less grammatically correct than that. What’s scary here? The American people REelected this guy.

3. Marked Men Two geniuses in Iowa decided to draw disguises on their faces with permanent market to rob someone. Shockingly, they were caught soon after by the police, who said, “We’re very skilled investigators and the black faces gave them right away.” The scary part, this probably seemed like a good idea because they were drunk. I like to drink. This could have been me!

4. Levi Johnston Goes Rogue Sarah Palin’s teenager’s baby daddy Levi Johnston has been on a promo tour, apparently to help his nude modeling career in Playgirl. Over the course of the interviews, he has given away alleged “Palin family secrets,” such as that Sarah refers to her Down Syndrome son as “retarded.” I’m not really sure what’s scarier here. That someone seems to feel the need to promote soft porn (that shit sells itself) or that Sarah Palin was a candidate for US Vice President.

5. The Dark Side of Wind Power Unlike the other things this week, this one hits close to home. I got a call from my parents this week saying they were possibly moving out of their house in Vermont. It seems after 25 years, planned installation of Wind Turbines on Susie Peak across the street might be enough to uproot them. With some research, they’d found out about a list of negative effects this would have, such as noise pollution (sometimes worse inside the house than out), not to mention the unsightly 450 ft tall towers on the ridge line in their view. My mom, good little activist she is, needed my help in launching a viral social media campaign to get the word out that before we go erecting wind farms in tiny Vermont towns, perhaps a little more research should be done. Of course, this isn’t going to be as easy as the Rock Art Brewery vs Monster thing, since you’re probably thinking, or great, these people are against sustainable energy! But obviously that’s not the case, but maybe wind power isn’t right for Vermont’s lack of vast expanses. So if you are remotely interested in being informed, here is a great article summing up some of the issues with it. http://www.poweredgenerators.com/wind/dark-side.html
