Under Review: Deeper

My mom used to get my dad the new Warren Miller movie every year for Christmas. My parents, you see, were recovering ski bums, and having moved from Idaho to Vermont to save me from the Mormons, they missed “real skiing.” These movies, I guess, were the best connection they had. I was young when Warren Miller used to make movies anyone would want to buy, but I remember them being less about skiing and more about a story. Sometimes they were a bit cheesy, but my dad seemed to enjoy them.

Watching the TGR production “Deeper” reminded me of this for some reason. There was nothing cheesy about Jeremy Jones’ journey into the unknown, and Glen Plake’s Mohawk didn’t star in it, but it was a different sort of snow flick then every other video I’ve sat through this year. Who am I kidding. It took all the trick-porn videos and shit on their faces. Personally, I don’t notice if someone is getting on to a rail hardway or regular. I don’t want to count how many times some dude spun around. But I can appreciate hiking to the top of a mountain, sleeping out a storm in a snow cave and nearly running out of food, then riding full speed down a 45 degree pitch to be totally badass. I don’t want to do it, but I can appreciate it.

This is not to say there is no stunting in the video – cameos by Josh Dirksen, Travis Rice, Ryland Bell, Jonaven Moore, Forrest Shearer, Johan Olofsson, Lucas Debari and more made for some requisite freestyle sections, but this video was more like a show on the Discovery Channel than a snowboard video. If I want to nitpick, then yes, Zimmerman, there were a few shots that were out of focus, but that’s what happens when you shoot film, and it’s totally artsy. That and it’s not like they had a chance to go back and reshoot anything in the movie – just another reason Deeper just made everyone else look silly.

I regret missing Deeper on the big screen this summer. I imagine the DVD experience pales in comparison to what a theater with surround sound would do to get your heart pumping. Plus, watching it on DVD I almost got scared off by the skiing at the beginning. Don’t worry, it’s just an ad, and once the movie starts, you won’t be bored. I highly recommend checking out this movie, even if you are the coolest cool dude. And hey, if you don’t wanna watch it over and over again, regift it. I for one know my dad is going to psyched on his copy this Christmas!

  1. Don Juan

It’s good to see some real snowboarding on this site

  2. thick8

    agreed

  3. 4one3

Just because it’s big mountain does not make it any more “real” than a jib sesh. snowboarding is snowboarding.

  4. Sam

4one3, yes it does. great review brooke. i thought it was a fantastic movie through and through. i really want a split board now, too!

  5. mn

it totally is real snowboarding compared to the rail stuff. i love rails, but this is 100x better and 100x more gnarly

  6. I ALREADY REVIEWED THIS MOVIE AND MY CONCLUSION IS THAT IF YOU’RE BLOWED AWAY BY IT YOU MUST WATCH SNOWBOARD MOVIES. IT WAS GOOD BUT COMEONSRSLY. SRSLYCOMEON.

  7. Easily the best movie since TITA, and in many respects so much more…. but that’s like comparing a New York to LA Formula 1 race at speed to riding Travis Parker’s Bikecar to Alaska; both are mindblowing in their own right.

Anyone who’s boot packed straight up a shit-your-pants face with full exposure above and below can tell you this is a whole new level of snowsliding and video comes nowhere near accurately relaying the reality. And of course Jeremy Jones is leading the pack, this totally backs up the superhuman escaped government cyborg theory! Frothing for my split-decision kit right now!

  8. MITIGATING_FACTOR: IT’S A SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS WHEN “YOU WON’T BE BORED” IS HIGH PRAISE. I GUESS THAT’S ALL YOU SAID.

AND AS FOR NO STUNTING, TRICE’S FIRST TRY FRIDAY AFTER TWO WEEKS IN A TENT OVER A MEGACRACK 50 MILES FROM NOWHERE IS PROBABLY THE GNARLIEST TRICK EVER. THAT’S HONESTLY THE MAINEST THING I TOOK AWAY FROM THE MOVIE.

IT’S A GOOD MOVIE. I GUESS THAT STANDS OUT THESE DAYS.

WHAT ARE THEY GIVING YOU A SPLITBOARD? YOU CANNOT BE ARSED TO WALK UP THE HILL COMEON LOL YOU SAID IT YOURESELV

  9. 1337pwner

    shovel the stairs Jeremy, wtf?

  10. Agreed on the TRice Death-Gap, crazy! Walking’s good, but splitting gets you to the base way faster.

  11. BagsO'Ass

  14. Fonzie

I’m with 4one3 on this one. That looks like some BA shit for sure, but I don’t know if it would keep me entertained. That’s a type of snowboarding I can’t relate to. That said, you’ve gotta be a beast to climb up those walls that JJ did, wow.

  15. Dada

Can’t wait for Christmas! I’ll act surprised. Thanks Brooke!
