The Storm of the Century!

Yesterday I really meant to go up to the mountain, but man, that thing is far away. But as a snowboard journalist, opening day is like money in the bank, and I wasn't about to totally blow it. Luckily, it also snowed in the city, much more convenient for myself. So I rounded up some hungover friends, set up my brand new board, and made it happen. The result was this YoBeat feature (and a very sore hip.) Enjoy.

Story of My Life

I am supposed to be writing a story about the BMX finals at the LG Action Sports Tour, but the thumping alt rock beats of MXPX are sort of distracting me. So I figured I'd link to the two stories I've already written because I know you are dying to know about all the action in the Inline Vert finals and have no idea where to find out! Day one Recap:  Halloween references, shake ups in the inline world and an attempt to make gansta rap sound interesting. Inline Vert finals: At least someone new won so there was a somewhat interesting story to go with this one. During all…

Snowboard time, already.

Between YoBeat, some print stuff, and the newly launched Snowboarder.com, I am feeling the pressure to come up with a lot of content right about now, especially since I want to keep alliancewakeskate.com going strong. But you know, it doesn't say Extreme Journalist on my business card for nothing, so here's the latest. As I mentioned Snowboarder.com finally launched and I had one feature up there. It was originally going to be for YoBeat but Nick always gets screwed by people with budgets. Anyway, Nate helped me out a ton on this one, about the shipping process. Looks like I will be doing more regular stuff for that site as…

Big in Europe

After Future went under, I sold off most of what I'd written to Euro mags, which any extreme journalist will tell you is the best thing to do with crap no one in the US will use. Of course, some of the stories were actually pretty good, and I am glad they found a home, even if some of the text is in German and I will probably never see them anyway. I guess the issue of On Board that I sold some teenager profiles too made it stateside, and although I haven't seen it, Adryan was nice enough to scan me a jpeg of the one profile I wrote…

It looks like I may have secured myself some work with a new snowboard site that's launching on October 23rd. I am stoked because it will hopefully replace the void left by Future in the snowboard world, and my bank account, and in this economy... Anyway, the reason I bring it up is because in my research of the new site's parent company, I ended up at Ryan Sheckler's site. I felt like I needed to preface this with a story because what I found on this site made me really embarrassed to be there. However, it was funny, so I will share it with you here. Here's a screen…

Photo Battle/Shoot Off/Firing Squad

I know people claim to like snowboarding and skateboarding because they are individual activities, blah, blah, but let's face it: we humans love to compete. The reason I bring this is up is because of YoBeat's weekly photo face off, which I thought we were calling Firing Squad but this week ended up being "photo battle." I can't take credit for this idea, in fact, Adryan was nice enough to suggest it, and Nick in turn, ran with it. But I told Nick and gave him the go ahead, so I will at least take a little credit. As it turns out, it's getting quite popular. We are in day…

Leaving the Comfort Zone

I don't often take enough advantage of this city I live in. It's got all the immenities of a big city, with that small town feel, or so I find myself telling people on planes when they ask me about Portland. But like anywhere you live for awhile, it's easy to get into a rut and forget to even try to do different things. Such was not the case this past weekend however! I was really proud of myself and here's why: Friday night I went to a Vegan rock show. Ok, well it wasn't very rocking, since it was just three dudes playing acoustic guitars, but it was still…

Working predominantly on the Internet, especially in these wonderful days of web 2.0, is awesome. Not only is the Internet endless, meaning you can write just about anything you want, (and I've got some good random ideas I've finally been able to bring to fruition thanks to Yobeat) but you get to know exactly what everyone else thinks of it, practically minutes after it's posted! No more waiting around for letters in the mail, which people rarely even bothered to write. Even before you could comment on everything, it was a matter of someone actually opening their mail program and writing an email. Then that email would actually say where…

The Future is Now

I am a big fan of making web videos. Not so much of watching them, but I love to make them and post them and then watch the traffic add up. But my issue with Youtube is that whole 100 mb limit. Unless your video is 30 seconds long, it's near impossible to make it look like anything other than crap when you compress it to under 100 mb. And never fail I would export my finished video to find it was 101 mb, meaning I would have to lower the quality even more to get it to load. It was a travesty really. But everything has changed now that…

Fun with Internets
