The End of Print, Not the End of Quality

I have been trying to get an interview done for alliancewakeskate.com for awhile now. Unfortunately, the person I am having one of my writers interview, was born before the 80's and doesn't seem to understand the concept of web. He just keeps asking "will it go in the magazine" instead of just answering the questions for a site that is checked by pretty much every wakeskater in the world, and will be seen by more eyes, and by more people who actually care, at that. Wakeskating is it's own animal, it's small, no-budget, etc etc. But my employer and I are investing all we can into producing quality content for…

Chickita is a wrap!

I just said I wasn't writing any more about this event, so if you are really interested, you can read one of the three stories I already wrote. One on YoBeat, one on Snowboarder.com and the press release which should be popping up as soon as Kelly sends it out. I was set to stay thru Tuesday but crappy weather and general laziness prompted me to change my ticket for tonight. Now I am sitting in Reno poaching the internet (thanks Robbie!) and waiting to head home. Good times all around.

John Webster photo. I will miss you this year worst enemy. Boo for real jobs. I am all packed up and waiting for my airport shuttle (thanks Nate!) so I can head down to Mammoth for the Nikita Chickita this weekend. I am a little bummed I am missing the Holy Oly, but Nick has assembled a crew of two photographers, a filmer and himself, so I think it's covered! Hopefully they don't get in each other's shots. And if Chikita is anything like last year, it will be a good time as well. This year I was less involved with the planning of Chickita, but I still helped with…

Welcome to the 90’s

I've recently returned from the Legendary Banked Slalom at Mt. Baker. Definitely one of the best contests out there, I was excited that Adryan not only forced me to go, but actually paid me for my services (impressive in these though economic times.) For the first time ever, I actually stayed in Glacier, which is sort of like another planet. On top of being dark all day long even on the brightest days, it still lacks cell service and Internet. I remember this from my years in Bellingham, but since that was more than 5 years ago (gulp) I thought maybe things had changed. Such was not the case! After…

The shot of the shot of the shot

People are constantly telling me how they want to write for Yobeat. Usually I will pass them off to Nick who is either best or worst editor ever, and we never hear from them again. But when Timbro, who is known as "the funny one"in our circle, started pitching ideas to me, I decided to manage him myself. Today he made his YoBeat debut with a great interview with (recently laid off) snowboard designer, Dave Appel. But this weekend the real Timbro saga will begin. Inspired by Best Week Ever, it's going to be hilarious and to give you a taste of what to expect, here is the photo shoot…

Who Says Bugz and Starter Jackets Aren’t Cool?

I went snowboarding on Friday and had an epifany of sorts. It could have just been that warm, sunny days in the middle of January bring out the kooks, but most snowboarders are not cool. Now that I am focusing a bit more energy on YoBeat I want to figure out how to make it unique, but also have mass appeal. As it stands right now we are failing miserably. It seems like you have two options in something such as the snowboard media: Appeal to the core while alienating the masses, or appeal to the masses and alienate the core. Obviously it seems the later would be more appealing…

Somehow I got on Nike 6.0's media list. Well actually I know exactly how. When they were just starting out, someone emailed YoBeat and asked for our address. I have been getting random packages ever since. It's a good list to be on, as special overnight deliveries have included a rad screen printed poster, a tube of orange shoe laces surrounding an actual pair of shoes, and other rad, random stuff. It's usually artsy enough that you keep it around, and you frequently see the pieces on display at the offices of magazines and the like. My second flight got canceled and they couldn't get me on another until the red eye Xmas eve so I said screw it and decided not to go. Thank you frequent flyer miles, I not only got my miles back at no charge, but they refunded the $10 I paid. I will make the pilgrimage  to Vermont some other time, when the weather…

I was going to just ride for fun, because it's the holidays, and I don't feel like anyone who is paying cares about homey shred sessions. As it turned out, Friday was pretty much the best conditions I've ever ridden at…

Basically, it makes me feel cool and legitimate to receive these items. However the…

I almost feel bad for how much trash I talked to the soccer moms at the tire place getting studs put on. Almost. They are still morons, but we are going on almost a week of snow and treacherous roads in Portland, with no signs of stopping.

Not only is blog the worst, and most ridiculous word in the English language (yep, it's acceptable in Scrabble), but I am obsessed. Like, more obsessed than I am with online scrabble (and as I've already made one reference in this post, you can see that's a lot.) Friday I went up to Mt. Hood with no intention of journalising in any way. I didn't even bring my camera. I was going to just ride for fun, because it's the holidays, and I don't feel like anyone who is paying cares about homey shred sessions. As it turned out, Friday was pretty much the best conditions I've ever ridden at…

So that means today was my official first day of the season. Ridiculously late at the fault of the snow, not me, but at least the gondola I was on didn't fall down. Meadows opened up Sunday, but I spent yesterday dealing with trying to get my studs put on. Newsflash: the day after the storm is not the best time to try and get this done.

I was set to stay thru Tuesday but crappy weather and general laziness prompted me to change my ticket for tonight.
